Mealworms - A Natural and Nutritious Treat for Your Pets

Our mealworms range from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in length, though slight size variations can occur since they are a natural product. Mealworms are a trusted food source for reptiles, amphibians, birds, and more, making them a favorite in the pet hobbyist community.

About Mealworms: Mealworms are the larvae of the darkling beetle (Tenebrio molitor) and are both affordable and easy to store. They make an excellent feeder insect for a variety of pets. We offer mealworms in quantities of 100, 500, 1,000, and 2,000.

Feeding Mealworms to Reptiles & Amphibians:

How to Feed: Mealworms can be offered as a treat or as part of a staple diet, depending on the species of your pet. It's important to dust them with a vitamin and mineral supplement before feeding them to ensure your pet gets the necessary nutrients. You can feed them using feeding tongs or in a designated dish.

Mealworms are perfect for reptiles and amphibians like leopard geckos, crested geckos, fat-tailed geckos, bearded dragons, and more. They are also loved by fish and wild birds, with some anglers even calling mealworms the ideal bait!

How to Store: For counts of 100, mealworms come pre-stored on wheat bran without food—just the way you want to keep them. Larger quantities may be shipped with different bedding. To extend their lifespan, store mealworms at 45-55°F. As they age, mealworms may darken and spoil—discard any black mealworms. If they pupate, those pupae can still be fed to your pet, but discard any adult beetles, as they tend to be unappealing to most animals. Under optimal conditions, mealworms can last for several weeks.

Feeding Mealworms to Birds:

How to Feed: Mealworms are an excellent high-protein treat for birds. Place them in a deep plastic dish or a suitable feeder, like the Droll Yankee Window Feeder, as mealworms tend to climb and escape from wooden feeders.

Wild birds will thrive on mealworms as they provide a quick energy boost, making them a great addition to your bird's diet.

How to Store: Mealworms are shipped stored on wheat bran without food, just as they should be kept. Keep them at 45-55°F to maintain freshness. As with reptile/amphibian care, mealworms will darken over time and should be discarded if they turn black. Older mealworms may pupate, which is fine to feed to your birds, but discard any adult beetles. Mealworms can last for several weeks if stored properly.

With mealworms from The Pet Zone, you're giving your pets a natural, nutritious, and tasty treat they’ll love. Whether for reptiles, amphibians, birds, or even as fishing bait, mealworms are an essential staple for any pet lover.
